2014 Super Bowl in Review 2

This was not the most entertaining Super Bowl, both in terms of gameplay and ads. Reaching a whopping 96.9 million viewers, advertisers paid millions for coveted Super Bowl airtime. And while there were several spots that delivered, many viewers feel that this year the ads fell short of the usual quality and humor expected from the big day.

 

The most controversial spot of the game went to Coca Cola with their multi-lingual version of “America, the Beautiful”, embracing the various cultures that make up our country. The intention is to show the diversity of our country.  Yet some people interpreted it as “Speak English or go home” or unpatriotic when this song is sung in other languages.  The ad also shows two dads rollerskating with their daughter. This was the first Super Bowl ad to feature a gay family, according to GLAAD, a lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender media advocacy organization.

 

My favorite ads are Doritos and Wonderful Pistachios. Wonderful Pistachios were aired in two short commercials between H & M David Beckham’s ad. The second ad of Wonderful Pistachios made fun of “branding”.  As a marketer, I can totally relate to that.  Check out the best and worst ads of this year’s Super Bowl and of all time in the following articles:

Coca-Cola Superbowl Ad Reflects the Reality of a Multilingual America

One of the most controversial Super Bowl ads this year did not rely on the usual tactics, such as humor, shock, a catchy tune, or clever turns of phrase. Instead, the much-talked-about advertisement from Coca-Cola simply presented the song, “America, the Beautiful” in seven different languages.

Super Bowl 2014: Best and Worst Commercials

This was not the best Super Bowl for commercials (or football)! You know it’s an off year when two of the most memorable spots involve Greek yogurt. That’s just a rather bleak landscape in general, “live culture” notwithstanding. Meanwhile, my favorite healthy snacks Doritos and M&Ms, which usually bring it hard for the Super Bowl, barely registered.

    I thought the Coca-Cola ad was wonderful. I have a college class of 37 students. Only 3 were born in America and have English as their native tongue. Who are my best students? The ones who are struggling to learn. Last semester the only student who received an 100 on my final exam barely knew an English word when the semester began. Lest we forget, very few people in this country do speak America’s native languages: Seminole, Cherokee, Choctaw, Ojibwe, etc. Rush Limbaugh’s immigrant ancestors probably spoke German and Allen West’s undoubtedly spoke an African language. My grandparents could not speak a word of English when they came to America, and I now teach English on the college level. Tolerance: the name is Coca-Cola!
